Life's a Windy Road

It was 7:30am when the alarm went off. For the first time in a long time, I dragged myself out of bed at such an hour to get ready for the day ahead. The car has been booked, the route sorted and the map studied. Honestly, reality didn't sink in until only this morning. My stomach was in knots - thousands of butterflies must be fluttering their wings in there.

At the car hire office, I believed the anxiety was evident on my face. The guy at the counter asked if I would like to have extra cover for the day at an additional $24. This would reduce any damage liability down to $330 from a whopping $2700. I hesitated for a while but said yes in the end. Obviously, I wasn't confident with my driving skills. He was spot on.

Swore I studied the map religiously the night before, so I was optimistic that I would be able to get to the Dandys without losing my way. But alas, how wrong can I be? I missed an exit and had to make slight amendment to my planned route. It was still good - not too nerve-wrecking. When I finally got to my destination, an hour and a half has lapsed since I left the car hire office. The website stated that the Dandys is supposed to be a short 45 min drive from Melbourne and hence, a quick getaway from the hustle and bustle of the city. Hmmm...Either I was driving at snail speed or my aforementioned "missed an exit" had cost me an additional 45 min. Or maybe, some guy out there should update this piece of information on the website - it is obviously not accurate! =)

Olinda was my first stop. I had to try the famous 'Pie in the Sky'. The place was not crowded. In fact, I was the 4th patron in the restaurant - the first was an old couple, the second wanted takeaway. "Where is the long queue that everyone mentions?", I wondered to myself. The waitress said hello and ushered me to a table in the corner. I could sense her slight surprise when I said "Table for one". Why should everyone assumes that most things come in a pair? - I'm sure you understand what I am trying to say. Her reaction made me feel lonely.

Since this was going to be my first and potentially last time at the restaurant, I ordered their"Golden Award Winner" - the Pie Floater.

I was disappointed. Firstly, I do not really like pies. I think that not only are they not tasty, they are fatty. Secondly, that Pie Floater was dry and bland; the stuffing was made with mince instead of chunky pieces of meat; the pastry was not crispy and fluffy; the mashed potato was tasteless and cold; and the pea and ham soup was just a yucky mass of green. All in all, the pie was horrible (in my eyes)! As I sat by the table on my own, I could not believe that I drove 1 1/2 hours from Melbourne to have that.

Nothing beats the pie I had at Harry's Cafe de Wheels in Sydney - that was the best pie I have ever had. And after today's food tasting expedition, I do not think I will give another pie a second chance.

My next stop was Sassafras - where the 'famous' Miss Marples Tea Room is. I was told Miss Marples is famous for scones and Devonshire tea. Even though my stomach was already bursting, I just had to try them. I parked my car and had a browse at the shops in Sassafras. I believe the most frequented shop would be the one next to Miss Marples that sells loads of tea and tea sets. My browse of Sassafras took only 15 min and that was because I gave the tea shop a good 10 min and I walked at an extremely slow pace. There are less than 5 shops that you could have a look in. So, my attempt at 'digesting' the pie didn't work. I went into Miss Marples about an hour after I had my lunch.

The Tea Room is indeed a quaint little English cottage. There were more patrons in the restaurant and most of them are retirees, I guessed. Again, I received an odd look when I walked in alone. And to add to my frustration, even the scones came in pairs! "Great!", I thought. "Not only am I feeling out of place being on my own, now I have to stuff myself with two scones."

And I couldn't leave the place without also trying their tea. So, I ordered a pot of Earl Grey. I have to say, the scones and tea were really lovely. I especially liked the home-made raspberry jam (which I didn't buy). The tea was also very fragrant - I wondered if they got it from the shop next door (which I also didn't buy). Although I didn't finish the scones nor the tea, I was in a slightly better mood.

It was around 2:30pm by then. I felt sleepy from so much food and did not have the mood to drive further up to the lookout. Back home I went. The return journey was more exciting than this morning's. On the way down the windy Mt Dandenong Tourist Road, I could smell something burning. For a moment there, I thought to myself, "That better not be some bushfire happening near me, I do not want to be burnt alive in the car like that poor lady on the news a while back!" Then a secondary thought crossed my mind, "Could the burning smell be coming from my own tires?". I've always said ignorance is bliss. So, I wound up the windows to continue my drive in blissful oblivion. I thought that once I am back on normal road, it should be a smooth ride home. But that wasn't the case. I lost my way big time and had to stop twice along the way to navigate myself back on track. That was nerve-wrecking and at that instant, an image of my mum flashed across my mind. She can never know I did this. Otherwise, it will be endless nagging for who knows how long.

Am I Such a PIG?

Bearing in mind I will be leaving Melbourne soon, I went on a quest to stuff my stomach with as much of Melbourne's 'fine' cuisine as possible. I believe the quest started weeks back but has intensified in the current week.

Thursday - D and I decided on movie together (Slumdog Millionaire). Since we had such a hearty meal at Old Kingdom the night before, we had our own light meal at home before meeting at Crown for the movie. I had a small serving of soup at 5pm. Obviously, much of it had already been digested by the time we met at the ticket box at nearly 7pm. So, I ordered popcorn and coke to accompany me throughout the movie. D didn't want to have any of it. Movie ended at 9:30 - it was time for coffee. We stopped by Greco, sat at the counter and my craving for potatoes suddenly sank in. I need and want potatoes so badly it was unreal. Wedges, I ordered.

Friday - caught up with D for dinner at Kum Den. It was solely the banana fritters that we were after. But for reasons beyond our control, we had soup, a dish to share and a banana fritter each. The soup and dish were good. But sadly, when it came to the supposed highlight of the meal, it was rather disappointing. The batter wasn't as crispy and golden as it used to be. D also mentioned the serving of honey or maple syrup was a lot lesser although the size of the ice-cream has gotten bigger. Of course, we were stuffed but that didn't deter us from our usual coffee plans after a meal. It was a cold and windy night. Instead of bracing the cold and walking to Lygon St (for a change), we ended up at the same place we so often end up at - Crown. This time round, we decided to patronise Automatic - partly because of the desserts it serves and the mashed potatoes that I seriously craved for. D was very disciplined - she stuck by her skinny latte (although not without some struggle! She has a sweet tooth). As for me - hmmm, I had a 'fat' latte and a bowl of chips. Did I also mention the campari after to wash down all that milk and potatoes? =)

My mission to get fat didn't end on Friday. Saturday - struggled to wake up. But I had to because of the long-awaited yum cha at Shark Fin House in the morning. I LOVE yum cha. D and I thought that the more people we gather for yum cha, the more (and different kinds of food) we will eat but that strangely wasn't the case. I felt full after the meal but wasn't as satisfied as I used to be years back. What happened, people?!

Well, I had to admit that after yum cha, I couldn't think about food. And not to mention fatigue had somehow crept in too. It was horrible. I felt like a zombie. All I could think about was my bed. But D and I remained in the city - to have coffee with everyone else later in the arvo. With no plans for the night, we went over to G&T's place to rest and look at their wedding albums while in the meantime trying to decide if we want to have dinner with LH and his pack. Soon, it was 5pm and yum cha was fully digested. Time to think about dinner and I successfully tempted everyone to a pub meal at PJ's!

Sunday (today) - I am going to hole up at home. It's about time I stop pigging out.

PS: The wedding photos taken in Melbourne were lovely. I also had a great week, all thanks to my lovely friends.

Stuff Thyself with Ducks!

This may look like a plate of your normal roast duck. But trust me, it is the most delicious Peking duck I have had in Melbourne. The way the duck is cut randomly, it doesn't bear any resemblance to the nicely- and thinly-sliced Peking duck you get served in the restaurants in Singapore (or Asia).

Today, caught up with G&T and D for dinner at my favourite Old Kingdom. Other than the little bit of traffic in the city, the ride to Smith Street was smooth and pleasant. I entered the restaurant with much anticipation - hoping that it would taste as good as I remembered it. After all, the meal wasn't cheap and if not tasty, it would (and had by now) add extra inches to my already-expanding waistline.

The colour of the crispy skin of the duck wasn't exactly what I remembered. The spring onions and cucumbers also seem to have shrunk in length. My friends told me I must have remembered wrongly - I didn't contest that.

Appearance aside - the duck tasted good! I cannot be sure if that was the same yumminess I experienced years back but I did not bother comparing.

After tonight, I had enough of ducks. The thought and sight of it irk me. So, I swear, "No more ducks for the year and next!" *Fingers crossed*

He's Just NOT That Into You

How many times have we misconstrued the intentions of that guy's gestures?

How many times have we done something silly in order to get his attention?

How many times have we engaged in childish giggles with our girlfriends just talking about him? (I love this though)

How many times have we given our all only to be disappointed and hurt?

At some point in our life, we have been guilty of the above (definitely some, if not all or maybe even more). I know I have.

The movie made me realised a few things: Never be afraid to hope. Dare to put yourself out there. You must believe that the most wonderful thing in life will happen to you. If it hasn't yet, it will one day. And sometimes, the best thing that can happen to you is to actually move on.

And like in the movie, I want to be an exception, not a rule.

Celebration of Love and Friendship

14 February - St Valentine's Day - a day when lovers celebrate their love for each other (in an elaborate and "forced" fashion for some?) and romance floods the air.

I now brand Valentine's Day a celebration of friendship. On this special day, I had dinner with D. She thought I was pretty crazy to have started getting ready for the night since 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Well, if done slowly and at your leisure, you'll be surprised.

Dinner was great and a long 3 hours. Girlish talk and laughter are just so therapeutic.

We continued the night with drinks elsewhere - more friends and mindless chatter.

Amidst all the laughter, I couldn't help but think how different the night would have been with that special someone. Nothing beats feeling loved and having someone look you in the eyes like the world is made only for the two of you.

I love Valentine's Day - whether I am attached or single, maybe more so when I'm seeing someone. I do not really care if some of you may think it is over-commercialised these days or everyday should be Valentine's Day for a couple in love, I am a hopeless romantic. A day like this should be exactly that - hopelessly romantic.

Bat Kut Teh Night!

Here is the chef responsible for the yummy Bat Kut Teh! =)

D and I were the first to arrive - given we had been wandering in the city/suburb for the entire day and had not have enough sleep the night before, we welcome a rest before food is served.

LH was in the midst of his artwork when we arrived. So, we put our "artistic talent" to good use.

I think it is beautiful and a good way to add colours to your home. My inspiration for the day!

(Above: The final product! =). Left: Aren't fresh flowers lovely?)

G & T finally arrived and we dug into the food. Malaysian But Ket Teh is so different from Singapore's - it has a lot more ingredients and is less soupy. Other than the expected pork ribs (or meat), there were mushrooms, beancurds and the whole lot. Singapore's version is pork ribs in peppery soup base. My friends from Malaysia definitely do not like our version. I can understand why.

It was a night of delicious food, good wine and great company!

View of Melbourne From Up High

It was a beautiful day. Too good a day to miss.
Took a walk along St Kilda beach. It looks so different now that the Fest is over - quiet and deserted but peaceful.

Tram 16 brought me to Federation Square. The plan was to hire a bike and ride around Melbourne city. But first up, lunch to satisfy my hunger. I stopped by Riverland for the 'famous' sausage and a cuppa - went for the duck & pistachio, it tastes nothing like duck but delicious nonetheless. As I sat by the river, taking in the view and wondrous weather, a number of cyclists rode past. Hmmm, that was when I realised I couldn't ride a bike today. Not in the attire I was in - think birkies, long black tights (which might be a tad too thin for decency) and a Longchamp. The cyclists I saw were in runners, sportswear and carried a backpack.

Oh well, I changed plans and took a walk in the city instead. It was after 5 when I ended up at Southgate. Eureka Tower is just 5 mins away, so I decided to check it out. One thing led to another and up to Eureka Skydeck I went. When I stepped out of the lift onto the 88th floor of the tallest residential building in the Southern hemisphere (so they say), I was blown away. The view was spectacular, stunning and just breathtaking.

(Melbourne is the reason for my interest in sports. MCG and Rod Laver Arena)

(I spend a lot of time at Fed Square. It is one of my favourite spots in the city to people-watch.)

(I think that might be a bushfire somewhere?)

(Royal Botanic Gardens Melbourne: I'll never forget my first walk in there...)

(Yarra River: I spend a lot of time sitting by the river, pondering in solitude.)

(Somewhere in the horizon is where I live at the moment - dodgy St Kilda. I'm so used to it now.)

I found a spot that I really liked and just sat there. I can imagine the view at night to be fascinating too. As I sat there, I somehow understood why I love Melbourne so much. It is such a beautiful city. For me, there is nothing not to love about it.

St Kilda Festival 2009

Today is the annual St Kilda Festival in Melbourne. If it had been a typical summer day, the sun would have been out and everyone would be in bikinis and swimmers. But, today is a typical Melbourne day - think four seasons in a day and unpredictable weather changes. The sun was not out, the sky was overcast, the wind was strong and there was the odd drizzle. Despite that, the crowd, music and booze were aplenty.

(P/S: Not a fair depiction of the Fest but it is the only one I've got)

As I weaved through the crowd, many thoughts went through my mind. At some point, I was simply lost in a world of my own. Everything else was just a blur (in a good way though). Life goes on, doesn't it? The world doesn't stop moving just because yours has come to a standstill.

Continued walking and I came across this young boy playing the drums on the streets. There was such a huge crowd gathered around him, nodding to his beats and applauding his skills at such a young age. He was doing his thing with such ease and confidence. And it was good, no doubt about that. All behind me were adults watching in awe. It is refreshing and inspiring to see someone so young dream BIG. "Dare to dream, girl!" - I told myself that.

Ended my day at the St Kilda Festival with a little bit of shopping - a tad guilty but it's my all-time favourite. I couldn't resist. So, my wardrobe now has a new addition - a lovely yellow top.

I Love My Friends!

It's amazing how, in times of needs and distress, true friends will always stand by you.

I caught up with LH for movie and coffee at Crown today. He knew everything but didn't probe. And I could tell, from the conversation we had, the subtle words of encouragement and love he was trying to convey. It was lovely. It made my day.
(P/S: LH, it would be at least another year before I could get that Rolex. Thanks for suggesting to go in there for a look though, I absolutely adore it.)

From this day onwards, I want to treasure every friendship I've made along the way. I want to remember all my friends and make an effort to maintain the friendship. And for those friendships which have kind of faded over the years for whatever reasons, I would like to rebuild them. Friends should be forever.

Thanks for being there for me, guys. I so LOVE you all! =) xoxo

Australian Open 2009

Today is the last day of the Australian Open. Here I am, sitting in my tiny living room in St Kilda, watching the most heart-stopping tennis match in the early part of 2009 - Federer vs Nadal. The first time I watched them was back in 2006. The Spaniard beat my hero and also went on to become top seed in the world. Years later, they meet again and are now in an intense battle for the number one position. The match has been going for 4 hours now.

I never thought I would enjoy watching the tennis. I do not play the sport nor do I know the sport (well). But strangely, I love watching it, especially men's matches - their muscles flexing, the concentration and intensity in their eyes and pure determination. My first Australian Open match at Rod Laver Arena left me in awe. I was captivated. Fixated. Federer gets full credit for sprouting my interest in tennis. He is the epitome of calmness and stability in times of stress.

11:45pm (AEST) - the world's top 2 players are now into the 5th set. My heart is thumping as I watch on.

Hmm, I really should have gotten myself a souvenir from this year's Open. The official towel used by the female players was on top of my list but at a whopping $55! I thought and thought and couldn't do it - it is too expensive. Now, I am regretting it. I wonder if I should quickly order it online when I still have the chance.

12:05am - Nadal's leading. I am worried. My stomach's in knots.
12:13am - The Spaniard won. =(

Till next year.
